Centrally located for all the experiences Northern Michigan has to offer
The hardest part of any trip isn't finding a place to stay; it's knowing where to go once you get there. We've done that work for you. From the best coffee shops within walking distance to hidden beaches worth the drive, these are our favorite spots that make Traverse City feel like home.
WHAT TO DO
In Traverse City, ice cream is an activity. Voted best scoop in America by Good morning America, Moomers is located about 15 minutes from downtown. Try a flight while sitting outside and watching the cows.
A signature activity for all ages is the famous sand dune climb at the Sleeping Bear Dunes. The #9 outlook is a feat, so prepare yourself for a few hours of hiking. If your looking for something shorter with breathtaking views of Lake Michigan, the Empire Bluff Trail is another family friendly hike that doesn’t disappoint. Be sure to swing by Grocers Daughter Chocolates in Empire for some treats and a Mocha.
Enjoy a day on water and rent a paddleboard. There are many different companies in the area to rent from. One of the easiest options is the rental stand at Clinch Park near the Splash Pad.
Visit one of our favorite little towns for day: Leland, which locals call Fish Town. Enhance your day by stopping by one (or three) of the many wineries along the way. Be sure to stop at the small shops along the fishing dock and watch for Salmon jumping in the dam. Grab one of the famous sandwiches from the Village Cheese Shanty. Make it a full day and either catch a ferry to the Manitou Islands or Stop in at Ben Maier Pottery downtown (where our plates and coffee mugs are from), pick up a bottle of wine and head to Vans Beach to find Leland Blue stones at sunset.
Take a short stroll to the Sara Hardy Farmers Market every Wednesday and Saturday in downtown Traverse City. We love the baked goods from fresh organic produce from Nine Bean Rows while picking up a stunning bouquet of flowers.
The Old State Hospital Grounds, a former mental hospital, is a wonderful spot to visit for the day. About a ten minute drive from downtown Traverse City, you can enjoy a farm to table brunch at Sugar to Salt or Redspire, take a hike in the woods on site and explore boutique shoppes in the basement of the “Village” area (condos above). Enjoy an early dinner to go (open til 6 pm) from the Spanglish white enjoying your food on the patio at Left Foot Charley winery or make reservations for an outstanding food experience at either Stella or Pepenero (two of our personal favorites).
An hour away, Frankfort makes for a great “daycation.” Take a 45 minute moderate hike offering stunning views of Lake Michigan at Greenpoint Dunes followed by a picnic lunch at the beautiful beach at the end of downtown Frankfort, where you’ll enjoy the expansive Lake Michigan beauty. Be sure to take a stroll down the brakewall all the way out to the lighthouse. Wind down with the delicious food and local beer at Stormcloud Brewery to top off the day. Make it an even later evening by catching a movie at the Cherry Bowl Drive-inTheatre in Beulah after picking up local produce at the Beulah Market Basket.
